The Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) second-cycle professional higher education Medicine study programme has been accredited for the maximum term of five years by the German Accreditation Agency for Health and Social Sciences (Akkreditierungsagentur im Bereich Gesundheit und Soziales, AHPGS), which is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). The study programme was evaluated in accordance with the WFME Global Standards for Basic Medical Education (BME Standards 2020).
Based on the information provided in the documentation and during the on-site visit, the group of international experts concluded that the Medicine study programme implemented by RSU complies with all evaluation criteria and international standards.
Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Jana Pavāre emphasises: ‘International accreditation is a significant confirmation of the quality of the RSU study programme and its compliance with the highest international standards. It is a team effort – a joint contribution of assistant professors, clinical teaching staff, students and the administration.
We purposefully create a study environment where theoretical knowledge, clinical practice and research complement one another in preparing future doctors for professional challenges both in Latvia and internationally.’
Structure of the study programme and study process
The comprehensive structure of the programme, combining theoretical, practical and clinical modules, was highly rated. The progressive structure of the programme, including practical training and supervised clinical practice, ensures the systematic development of knowledge, skills and professional competences. Simulation-based education and structured clinical rotations allow students to consolidate their knowledge both before and during clinical practice.
Continuous improvement
The examination system, which is clearly regulated and fair, as well as the diverse student progress assessment methods, were positively evaluated. The academic staff was recognised as highly qualified, and the quality assurance system as stable and effective. The experts emphasised that assessment results are used for the further improvement of the programme and that non-discriminatory principles are observed in the admission process.
Importance of the programme and international competitiveness
The decision confirms that the RSU Medicine study programme complies with the highest European and international quality standards and strengthens the university’s position as an internationally competitive medical education institution.
