Modern sport is about much more than just physical activity and competition. It is a lifestyle and a foundation for health, as well as an opportunity to inspire others to become stronger, more confident, and more active. As a result, there is a growing demand in the labour market for professional and knowledgeable sports coaches who can not only lead training sessions but also help people achieve their goals safely and effectively.
The updated Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Sports Coach short-cycle (first-level) higher professional education study programme offers modern, practice-based education for those who wish to turn their passion for sport into a professional career. The programme is accredited until 2032 and prepares competitive sports and fitness coaches.
Starting from the 2026/2027 academic year, the Sports Coach study programme will be available both in Rīga and at the RSU Liepāja Branch, broadening access to high-quality sports coach education in the Kurzeme region.
Studies for active and driven people
Inese Ļubinska, Head of the RSU Sports study direction and the Sports Coach study programme in Riga and Liepāja, emphasises that the programme’s main goal is to train professional coaches who can work successfully in the modern sport and health sector. ‘As the head of the programme, it is important for me that students gain not only theoretical knowledge about the role of a sports coach but also the practical skills required in real working environments,’ says Ļubinska.
The two-year study programme is designed to enable students to gradually develop their professional competencies and successfully enter the labour market while still studying. ‘We have developed a flexible study model. Most classes on Thursdays are delivered remotely, while on Fridays students attend practical classes in person. This allows students to combine their studies with work, professional sport, and other everyday commitments,’ explains Ļubinska.
She notes that from the new academic year, the programme will be offered in two subprogrammes – Sports-Specific Coach and Fitness Coach – allowing prospective students to choose the professional pathway that best matches their career goals.
It is important to note that the content of the Sports Coach study programme offered at the RSU Liepāja Branch will be identical to the programme delivered in Rīga, ensuring the same high quality of education regardless of the place of study.
Practice-based knowledge
‘The study process is designed to provide students with both in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical skills, based on the latest developments in the sports sector and an evidence-based approach,’ states Ļubinska.
During their studies, students learn how to plan and lead training sessions, gain knowledge of sports psychology and communication skills, and explore the principles of health promotion and injury prevention, as well as aspects of sports organisation and occupational safety. A significant part of the programme consists of practical classes and work with various target groups.
‘The development of critical thinking and the ability to make professional decisions in a variety of situations are equally important,’ adds the head of the programme.
Students learn from experienced lecturers and industry professionals, while also gaining practical experience in sports clubs, fitness centres, and other sports organisations.
Wide array of career opportunities in the sport and fitness sector
After graduating from the programme, alumni can work in sports schools, professional and amateur sports clubs, fitness centres, educational institutions, sports organisations and federations, as well as develop their own practice as personal trainers or health promotion specialists.
Qualified sports and fitness coaches are in high demand in the labour market, and our graduates have broad professional opportunities.

Head of the Sports study direction
The programme also provides an opportunity to continue studies within the Sports Science professional bachelor’s programme, as the study content of the short-cycle programme is aligned with that of the first two years of the bachelor’s programme.
From student to member of teaching staff: an experience story
Kristiana Jansone is a graduate of the programme, a fitness coach, and currently also a lecturer at the Department of Individual and Team Sports of the RSU Latvian Academy of Sport Education.
‘I wanted to obtain academic education in sports coaching, and I was looking for a programme in Latvia that would encompass all the knowledge necessary for the profession, as well as an in-depth understanding of health-promotion opportunities through fitness methods. It was also important for me to acquire practical skills that could be applied in real-life situations,’ shares Kristiana.
Both the content of the programme and recommendations from coaches influenced her decision to choose RSU. Today, she applies her knowledge in her work with a variety of clients – professional athletes, seniors, and office workers – while also sharing her experience with students.
You will gain the knowledge and skills required to become a respected and competitive coach in both the local and international labour market from lecturers and coaches who are highly recognised in Latvia and abroad.
