The Ambassador of Sweden to Latvia, Daniel Olsson, visited the Medical Education Technology Centre (METC) at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) earlier this week, 4 February. During the visit, the Ambassador had a meeting with the RSU management, learning about the METC infrastructure, simulation equipment, and military medicine training opportunities used in the study process and in the training of healthcare professionals.

During the meeting, the Ambassador and the university’s management discussed the current and potential future collaboration between RSU and Swedish education and healthcare institutions. To date, RSU and Swedish researchers have jointly implemented at least five research projects, primarily in the fields of medicine and public health, thereby strengthening the RSU position in the Northern European research area.

During the visit, RSU also emphasised its strategic goal to develop cooperation with Sweden in clinical research, seeking long-term partners for the implementation of both scientific and study activities in Swedish clinical centres in the future. Such cooperation would allow for an even closer integration of academic research with clinical practice and innovation in healthcare.

The Ambassador of Sweden expressed his appreciation for the cooperation so far and the RSU international role in medical education, particularly highlighting the high level of interest of Swedish students in studying at RSU. The Ambassador noted that nearly 10% of all medical degree holders in Sweden have obtained their education at RSU, which confirms the university’s reputation and the quality of studies.

This interest continues to this day - in the 2026 winter admission, the largest group among international students comes from Sweden, with more than 70 new students from Sweden beginning their studies at RSU last week. This once again confirms the significant role of RSU in the education of future Swedish medical professionals and the university’s stable position in the international education environment.

Since 2022, Sweden has been the most represented country at RSU, with Swedish students accounting for 32 % of the total number of international students. In the current academic year, 993 Swedish students are studying at RSU, compared to 2020, when their number was almost half as large - 501 students. The Swedish presence at RSU is not limited to students alone - nine representatives of Swedish academic staff are also currently involved in the study process.

The Ambassador’s visit marks the next step in advancing cooperation between RSU and its Swedish partners in the fields of education, research, and clinical practice.
