The year has started with exciting news: Tampa General Hospital's (TGH) Transplant Institute, where Rīga Stradiņs University (RSU) Council Member Gundars Katlaps serves as Co-Director of Aortic Surgery, Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation, and Chief of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Section at TGH, has officially been ranked first in the US by transplant volume for 2024.

Katlaps is very proud of this achievement and write on his social media: ‘With a remarkable 889 transplants performed, this milestone is a testament to the dedication, skill and compassion of our entire transplant team. This achievement reflects not only the expertise, innovation and world-class quality of our program but also the trust placed in us by our patients and their loved ones. Thank you to our incredible team for making this extraordinary accomplishment possible.’

About Gundars Katlaps

Gundars Katlaps received his medical degree in surgery from the former Latvian Medical Academy (now RSU) and Stanford University, and completed his postgraduate studies at the Medical College of Virginia and Papworth Hospital in Cambridge. Katlaps has many years of experience in leadership positions in medical institutions in Virginia and Florida, in medical research and education, as well as several years of experience as director of a cardiothoracic surgery residency programme. From 2014 to 2019, he served as Honorary Consul of Latvia to the USA, Virginia.
