Welcome to winter at RSU: international students begin their studies in Riga

In February 2026, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) welcomed 262 new international students from 31 countries as part of the February intake. Following a competitive admissions cycle that attracted 621 applicants from 80 countries, students began their studies in Medicine (230 students) and Dentistry (32 students).

Demand for RSU’s programmes remains strong, with 2.28 applicants per study place in Medicine and 3.10 applicants per place in Dentistry, reflecting the university’s growing international reputation.

The winter intake brings together a diverse cohort, with the largest student groups arriving from Sweden (29.4%), Germany (14.9%), Finland (13.7%), and Norway (8.4%).

To support mid-year arrivals, the RSU International Department has prepared a specific winter onboarding programme offering academic orientation, practical support, opportunities to connect with peers and mentors, and guidance on adapting to life in Riga during the winter season.

Welcoming the new students, RSU Chancellor Toms Baumanis highlighted both the challenges and rewards of studying at RSU. ‘The university family is delighted that you have chosen to study at RSU. The trust you have placed in us must be earned, and we will do our utmost to provide you with the best opportunities in studies, research, and well-being. Studying at RSU will not be easy – that I can promise. At the same time, I can assure you that the satisfaction and pride you will feel upon receiving your diploma will be immense.

Your diploma will open the door to a successful professional career.’

Director of the International Department Māris Ginters encouraged students to view this semester as the beginning of a new chapter in their personal and professional journey. Holding up a notebook, he remarked, ‘Imagine that this notebook is your story. A new chapter begins right now. You are the author of this chapter in your life, and only you can decide what will be written on its pages.’

The February intake continues RSU’s mission to provide an internationally competitive education and a globally relevant study environment, marking the start of a transformative academic journey in Riga.
