How can I become a RSU library user?

RSU students are automatically registered in the library system after reading the rules of library use in e-studies.  

RSU employees and guests are registered on their first visit to the library.

NB: It is the responsibility of each library user to make sure that the information provided about them in the library system is correct on the next visit to the library.

Why do I need to re-register at the library?

Re-registering at the library is necessary to make full use of the library's services and information resources. If you have not re-registered, you will not be able to renew or check out books.

How can I borrow / bring back borrowed information resources at a self-check device?

 

 

What is a Open Access Loan and an Information Centre?

The Open Access Loan is located on the ground floor of block G and contains information resources 24/7, with some exceptions on public holidays. A security guard is stationed in the Open Access Loan after librarian's office hours to ensure order in the library.

The Information Centre is located on the 1st floor of block G and is open during regular opening hours. The Information Centre holds the only copies of the library's information resources and is for on-site use only.

Who can use 24/7 mode in the Open Access Loan?

RSU students and staff can use the 24/7 mode of the Open Access Loan all day and night, but guests from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

How do Latvian public holidays affect the library's opening hours?

Opening hours are usually shortened to 3:00 p.m. on the day before the public holiday. On public holidays, the library is closed (in some cases 24/7 is available).

Latvian public holidays that can affect librays working hours: 1 January, days around Easter, 1 May, 4 May, Mother’s day (second sunday in May), Whitsun (the time changes every year), 23 and 24 June, 18 November, days around Christmas, 31 December.

How can I recommend information resources for the Library's collection?

Users can suggest books to add to the collection or request more copies of existing ones. These suggestions will be reviewed by the RSU Library Collection Commission.

  • Library patrons have the prerogative to propose additions to the RSU library collection through the completion of an open-format form available within help.rsu.lv section.
  • In the library's study areas, both in the main building and its branches, you'll find boxes with forms. These forms are used to request study materials you need, including books that are not available or extra reading materials.

The RSU Library will be grateful to everyone for their book donations that are needed to support users' informational needs and the study process. We also inform you that the library does not have the possibility to purchase information sources for cash.

Use of the RSU library services

Can users other than RSU students or employees use the library services?

Yes, RSU Library services are available to everyone according to the library's rules and charges and fines schedule.

How can I print or photocopy materials?

To print or photocopy materials, you first need to supplement your virtual wallet on the MyRSU Student Portal. How to do this can be found here: https://wiki.rsu.lv/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=23724196 After supplementing your wallet, use the e-services template or one of the printing kiosks in RSU buildings or the library stationary computers to send the document to the multifunctional device (DFI) for printing. Remember to activate print release by swiping your student ID card at the DFI.

How can I order books from other libraries?

Interlibrary loan (ILL) and international interlibrary loan (ILL) enable library users to order from other Latvian and foreign libraries and document delivery centres sources of information that are not available in the RSU library collection. Read more

Before ordering the required source of information via the ILL, please make sure that it is not available in the RSU Library's collection or subscribed databases.

Use of information resources

What do the stickers on the books mean?

Every book in the library's collection has a sticker.  

  • Red – reading room book, you are not allowed to take the book home.
  • Green – short-term book, means you can check out for 30 days, with the possibility of renewal.
  • White – long-term book, means you can check out for whole semester, with the possibility of renewal.

The Information Centre has two-coloured shelf markings: green for medical books and orange for social science books. Different coloured stickers on the spines of the books indicate their affiliation to a particular section, which can be seen in the descriptions at the ends of the shelves.

What is the status of a book?

Status indicates the availability of a book in the library. The most common statuses are "30 days" and "For the term", which indicate the period of use of the book, while "In Reading Room" is for books that you are not allowed to take the book home.

How can I reserve books or information resources?

Log in to PRIMO using your RSU email and password.
 
Search for the book you need. Choose a resource that is available in the RSU Library.
 
Look at the resource locations and select a title available on a short-term or long-term subscription.
 
Select the publication on the shelf, see how many days it is available and select "Order".
 
View the details of the resource you want to claim. If you have selected the resource you need, select the "Send request" option.
 
You will receive confirmation that the action has been completed. Close the copy view.
 
Go to your profile and see the details of the expenses you've claimed under "My claims".
 
If your request shows that it is reserved, you can go to the Library!

How many books or information resources can I check out from the library at once?

You can check out 20 books at a time (5 books with green stickers or 30-day loan and 15 books with white stickers or semester loan).
The number of books checked out may not exceed 20!

How can I pay fee for overdue resources?

The first thing to do is to find out the amount of the late fee - you can find this in your virtual library card in PRIMO, under "Payments" or by contacting one of the library service points.

It is possible to pay the overdue amount using one of the RSU details (https://www.rsu.lv/rekviziti ), indicating "RSU Library Overdue Amount" in the purpose of payment. After the payment has been made, the payment order should be sent to the e-mail address bibliotekasatrsu[pnkts]lv , thus confirming the payment of the late fee. The librarian will inform you about the process of settling the debt.

Can I check in the books after the library's opening hours?

Yes, you can return books using the self-service machine in the Open Access Loan or via the book drop box:   

  • at the RSU main building on the Dzirciema Street side (next to the SEB ATM)
  • at the RSU Red Cross Medical College (5 Jāņa Asara Street)
