Children's Clinical University Hospital (CCUH) is the largest specialized multi-profile healthcare institution for children in Latvia with the vision to be internationally recognized healthcare, education and research   ecosystem that provides the qualitative healthcare services for children in Latvia and beyond. It is part of ECHO (www.echohospitals.org/) - the network of leading children’s hospitals across Europe. In 2023 CCUH signed several memorandums of understanding (MoU) with leading hospitals and research centres, for example, with Princess Máxima Center - Europe's to start collaboration with leading paediatric oncology research hospital; Karolinska Institute, Oslo University Hospital, Latvian Biomedical research and study centre for the establishment of Latvian Childhood Cancer Biobank.

The professor of science will conduct fundamental and/or applied research in the priority scientific field of RSU and CCUH - paediatric oncology - using the available resources and infrastructure of both RSU and CCUH. By implementing high-level research, attracting talented researchers and clinicians, forming multidisciplinary team(s), engaging in educational activities and consulting colleagues, the Professor of Science will promote and contribute the development and advancement of precision medicine in the field of paediatric oncology in Latvia.

Field of science: paediatric oncology and precision medicine

Research directions: paediatric oncology/paediatrics, incl. but not limited to: translational medicine, molecular biology, molecular genetics, precision medicine, paediatric oncology pathology, rare diseases, cell therapy, diagnostics, treatment, care, clinical research, clinical outcome monitoring, biomarker identification, proteomics, epigenetics, use of WGS for diagnostics in paediatric oncology, etc.
 

We offer:

  • Salary from EUR 6,000 (gross) per month full-time, additional material motivation according to the achieved results
  • Salary can be revised by attracting external funding of 50% with performance bonus up to 15% and attracting 100% external funding of salary with performance bonus of up to 30%
  • Start-up grant for the start of scientific activity and appropriate resources for achieving goals (the science professor's laboratory is created covering the infrastructure and resources of both RSU and CCUH)
  • The tenured professor is confirmed in the position for six years with evaluation of the results after three years. In case of a positive evaluation, the employment contract is continued. Before the six-year deadline, the performance is re-evaluated and in the case of a positive evaluation, the rector of RSU concludes an employment contract with the employee for an indefinite period with regular performance evaluation at least once every six years.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in science (PhD)
  • The Hirsch index of at least 10 and the last 3 years indexed publications in SCOPUS/Web of Science correspond to the content of RSU and CCUH priority - the field of paediatric oncology or precision medicine
  • Academic work experience as a professor or at least 3 years as an associate professor
  • Experience working in clinical and multidisciplinary teams, including leading a multidisciplinary scientific group. 
  • Experience in pedagogical work (supervision of doctoral theses)
  • Experience in leading international and/or national level research projects
  • Experience in the preparation, management and partnership of projects funded by EU research and innovation programs (Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe), evaluated above the quality threshold or equivalent
  • Impeccable reputation and visibility in your research field
  • Good communication and team building skills
  • Good clinical practice certificate considered as advantage if clinical research is planned
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language at C1 level (according to the knowledge levels set by the CEFR)

Responsibilities

  • Develop the applied research direction in paediatric oncology
  • To attract the necessary funding for the implementation of the research direction, including the additional funding necessary for the development of the research group
  • Lead research projects (principal investigator) in the respective research area of paediatric oncology and precision medicine
  • Organise and participate in educational and consulting events that correspond to the interests and scope of the parties
  • Participate in the development of the CCUH Healthcare Advancement Centre
  • Foster the CCUH collaborations with ECHO network hospitals and Princess Maxima Center
  • Within the limits of their competence, participate in the development of clinical research, in the creation of the necessary environment for innovation and education, support the implementation of clinical treatment protocols at CCUH (for example, AllTogether, Umbrella, etc.), participate in CCUH multidisciplinary meetings, for example, a multidisciplinary team with the involvement of specialists from the molecular diagnostics laboratory
  • Facilitate patient engagement in research
  • Participate in international consortia and projects
  • Supervise the works of doctoral students, post-doctoral students, residents
  • Prepare scientific publications and communicate research results
  • Develop research infrastructure and research methods
  • To comply with research ethics and data security principles and binding regulations

  • A description of the research direction and a research plan for the next 6 (six) year’s corresponding to the relevant group of scientific branches, which contains the justification of the research topic, information about the necessary human resources and infrastructure, existing institutions and international cooperation, as well as a strategy for attracting external funding
