Course level:Master's
Target audience:Medicine
Language:English, Latvian

Branch of science:Clinical medicine

Objective

Provide insight and acquire knowledge of dermatology and venerology, anaesthesiology and ophthalmology, including clinical manifestations, potential complications, principles of patient treatment and care.

Prerequisites

Anatomy, histology, physiology, pathologic anatomy, pathologic physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, propaedeutics, internal diseases, infectious diseases, pharmacology and immunology, types of surgery, topographical anatomy, pathological physiology, clinical laboratory examinations, first aid during patient’s primary and secondary investigation on the site of accident, basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic elements of shock.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Dermatology and venereology: Students will be able to define, characterise and classify skin and venereal diseases; describe their etiopathogenesis and clinical manifestations that would allow them to be recognised and distinguished among other diseases. They will be able to express and explain further diagnostic and therapeutic tactics as they will be able to list and systematise modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods. They will know how to organise preventive and epidemiological measures in cases of contagious dermatoses and sexually transmitted diseases. Students will be able to recognise malignant skin formations and organise a further action plan in these cases.

Ophthalmology: On successful completion of the study course the students will have acquired in-depth knowledge and will be able to show eye anatomy on visual aids, to describe physiology of the eye, to explain the most frequent eye disease etiopathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnostic and therapeutic principles and the prognosis.

Anesthesiology: As a result of the study course, students will be able to name and describe the methods of anesthesiology and intensive care, recognize and describe shock (especially hypovolemic, anaphylactic, septic), be able to perform advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, be able to name and describe changes in pathophysiological and biochemical processes under the influence of surgical trauma, the devastating effect of pain syndrome on the body and the transmission of nociceptive impulses to the CNS, describe the types of pain syndrome blockade in the reflex arc, the basic principles, types, advantages and side effects of anesthesia, the peculiarities of the preoperative examination of a surgical patient, the method of assessing the physical condition of a surgical patient with the ASA scale, as well as the basic principles of preoperative preparation of a surgical patient and perioperative care, critical conditions and the basics of intensive care.

Skills

1.Dermatology and venerology: Student will be taught to acquire a dermatological, venereological and sexual history; investigate specific skin changes in dermatology; diagnosis; draw up a patient examination plan; prescribe different investigative methods, justifying their necessity; draw up a treatment plan; explain to the patient the causes, progress, treatment and prevention possibilities, necessity, prognosis of the disease.

Ophthalmology: as a result of learning the study course, the student will be able to:
• Test visual acuity without correction
• perform an ophthalmoscopy of fundus oculi examination
inspect the eye in slitt lamp
• take action in acute situations in ophthalmology;
• examine the eye patient to assess the need and extent of ophthalmological assistance.

Anesthesiology: Will be able to perform electrical defibrillation of the heart, basic measures of advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ensure airway patency with instrumental methods (airway, laryngeal mask, laryngeal tube, tracheal intubation, cricothyroidotomy), will be able to assess the condition of a comatose patient.

Competence

1.Dermatology and venereology: As a result of theoretical and practical knowledge acquired, students are able to cooperate professionally with patients and colleagues in the field of diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment and prevention of dermatological and venereal diseases, in accordance with standards of medical ethics and patient rights; to act as a health facilitator in the context of public and individual prevention of skin and venereal diseases; to plan independently the cognitive process to balance the existing knowledge in the compulsory course with the new subject matter, to use literature, e-environment, knowledge of colleagues and teachers, making precise diagnosis and differential diagnosis as well as the issue to be addressed.

Ophthalmology: On completion of the course programme the student will be ready to work with ophthalmic patients in General Practitioner’s surgery and to continue their further studies. The student will be able to perform primary ophthalmic care in compliance with ethical and legal aspects, to evaluate the judgement of an ophthalmologist and to plan the examination and treatment of a patient; to interpret the results of ophthalmic examination, to relate these results to the specific clinical situation and to link them with the joint examination process.

Anesthesiology: Students will be able to use the described knowledge and skills when performing advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, analyze the types and stages of general and regional anesthesia, the risk of surgery and anesthesia, analyze intensive care in more common situations, the competence to interpret clinical, biochemical, water-electrolyte analyses, blood gas composition and acid-base balance indicators, coagulation indicators, relate them to a specific clinical situation and link them to a common investigation process, interpret clinical and laboratory signs of renal and hepatic failure, linking them to the general condition and develop a competent action plan, relate central hemodynamic indicators to a specific clinical situation and link them to a common investigation process, be able to develop their own immediate action plan and far-reaching action tactics regarding complex and long-term health problems in patients, and coordinate it with the activities of other participants in the healthcare system, conduct a situation analysis, demonstrate an individual attitude towards the patient, balancedly applying general action guidelines and a creative approach to each clinical case, make evidence-based, testable and scientifically informed decisions regarding the health or life of patients.
