Objective

To ensure acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in urogenital radiology according to the requirements of the radiology speciality regulations to prepare doctors for certification in diagnostic radiologist’s speciality according to regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.• To classify and recognise the normal anatomy of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, including normal variants.
• To classify and recognise the normal anatomy of the retroperitoneal space, pelvis and genital tract, including normal variants.
• To recognise, formulate and explain indicators of kidney function and radiological indications for the use of contrast material, contraindications in cases of kidney diseases.
• To name, explain and radiologically assess the indications, contraindications, basic principles of transrectal prostate examination.
• To name, explain and radiologically assess the most common pathologies of the urogenital system and their radiological differential diagnostic possibilities, including indications of imaging diagnosis and differential diagnosis of tumours in kidneys and urinary tract, the characteristic diagnostic imaging findings of most common renal tumours.

Skills

1.• To describe, evaluate and explain urinary tract report radiographs and their descriptions.
• To differentiate between, interpret and explain intravenous urogram, retrograde pyeloureterography, nephrostogram, ascending urethrogram and micturating cystourethrogram examinations, their indications and contraindications.
• To evaluate, explain the basic principles and radiological findings of transrectal prostate US under the lecturer’s guidance and supervision.
• To evaluate, demonstrate and explain the basic principles of transabdominal US of the genitourinary system and descriptions thereof.
• To differentiate between, interpret and explain CT protocols of the retroperitoneal space, urinary tract and pelvis and descriptions thereof under the supervision of the lecturer.
• To recognise, evaluate and explain MR protocols of the retroperitoneal space, urinary tract and pelvis and descriptions thereof under the supervision of the lecturer.
• To evaluate, explain and interpret the possibilities of radiological evaluation of the position of nephrostoma with US, X-ray and CT under the lecturer’s guidance and supervision.

Competence

1.• To interpret, evaluate and substantiate the principles and descriptions of performing transabdominal US of the urinary tract.
• To justify, plan and interpret the principles and descriptions of transrectal US of the prostate.
• To interpret, evaluate and compare CT protocols of the retroperitoneal space, urinary tract and pelvis and descriptions thereof under the supervision of the lecturer.
• To justify, plan and interpret MR protocols of the retroperitoneal space, urinary tract and pelvis and descriptions thereof.
• To justify, plan and interpret the radiological evaluation of the condition of nephrostomes under the lecturer’s guidance and supervision.
