RSU launches new programme to obtain Sports Coach Category C certificate
On 16 September, the opening event of the lifelong learning programme Basic Knowledge for Obtaining Sports Coach Category C Certificate took place at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Institute of Anatomy and Anthropology, bringing together more than 50 participants.
During the event, participants learned about the study process, teaching approach, and practical solutions, as well as discussed current issues in the field of sports. The programme’s lecturers and team representatives emphasised the importance of the coaching profession in strengthening public health, highlighting that a coach’s work should be grounded in scientific knowledge and professional responsibility.
‘A category C certificate is the first step towards answering the question: am I aware that working in the field of sport means taking responsibility for every individual who entrusts their health to a coach?’ said Inese Ļubinska, RSU lecturer and Head of the Sports Study Field. She also emphasised that belonging to the profession requires the continuous development of knowledge, skills, and competences.
Diāna Laipniece, Principal of the RSU Latvian Academy of Sport Education (RSU LASE), also noted that the high demand for this programme demonstrates the determination of the new generation of coaches to grow professionally:
‘Future coaches understand the importance of development and are ready to invest in their qualification in order to provide high-quality services based on science and best practices.’
The programme combines the academic expertise of lecturers from both RSU and RSU LASE with the practical experience of sports professionals. Participants acquire the basics in anatomy and physiology, sports education and psychology, sports medicine, nutrition and hygiene, as well as in training planning and management.
Kristiana Jansone, RSU lecturer and certified fitness, pilates, and yoga coach, whose professional path began with Category C training, encouraged students to approach their studies actively: ‘I invite you to acquire knowledge with an open mind, ask many questions, and explore topics in depth. This training is an opportunity for prospective professional growth.’
The programme is based on an evidence-based approach, safe physical activity dosing, and effective communication with athletes and their support staff.
‘Being a coach means being responsible for one's performance and professionalism,’ acknowledged Inese Ļubinska, emphasising that a professional attitude is an integral part of a coach’s work.
