September 29th – World Heart Day
World Heart Day, held annually on 29 September, is a global campaign led by the World Heart Federation (WHF) to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease (CVD)—the world’s leading cause of death.
Each year, cardiovascular disease (CVD) claims over 20.5 million lives. Up to 80% of premature CVD deaths are preventable through affordable access to care, early screening, and more opportunities to make healthy choices in nutrition and stay active (WHF, 2025).
Theme for this year: DON’T MISS A BEAT encourages people to keep the beat by moving for at least 25 minutes on 25 days throughout September, in honour of the 25th anniversary of WHD.
The World Heart Federation report states that obesity is now one of the leading drivers of heart problems worldwide. Excess weight increases the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and other conditions that can damage the heart. With nearly 900 million adults already living with obesity, the numbers are rising fast — and so are the cases of cardiovascular disease linked to it.
For World Heart Day, the Federation is calling on people everywhere to take simple, daily steps to protect their hearts: move more, eat balanced meals, and avoid unhealthy habits. Even modest changes, like regular walking or small improvements in diet, can lower the risk of heart disease and improve overall wellbeing.
