On 15 September, students, faculty members and other interested participants are invited to the presentation and discussion of the book 'British Statecraft and the Baltic Sea Region: A Documentary History' with its authors from the University of Cambridge.
The book’s authors, Hugo Bromley, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Cambridge Centre for Geopolitics, and Brendan Simms, Professor of the History of International Relations at the University of Cambridge, explore Britain’s role in the Baltic Sea region through historical documents and their analysis. The book traces British diplomatic, political and commercial engagement in the region over more than 300 years, while also examining today’s geopolitical landscape and the significance of the Baltic region in British strategy.
During the event, the authors will introduce the book’s key ideas and discuss Britain’s historical and contemporary role in the Baltic Sea region, as well as its significance in the broader context of European security and geopolitics.
This will be the only presentation of British Statecraft and the Baltic Sea Region in Latvia.
The authors
Hugo Bromley holds a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge. He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Centre for Geopolitics, Cambridge. As the Engelsberg Applied History Research Fellow, Dr Bromley acts as an assistant director for the Centre for Geopolitics, coordinates the Centre’s work on economic statecraft and applied history and leads the UK Union Programme.
Brendan Simms is a Professor of the history of international relations in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge. He is the founder and Director of the Centre for Geopolitics and co-leader of the Baltic Geopolitics Programme. Prof. Simms works on European geopolitics, past and present, and his principal interests are the German Question, Britain and Europe, Hitler’s global antisemitism, humanitarian intervention and state construction.
The event is organised in cooperation with the Faculty of Social Sciences at Rīga Stradiņš University and the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Latvia.
Admission to the event is free of charge.
