In July 2020, the Institute of the History of Medicine of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) launched a Baltic-German University Liaison Office project in cooperation with Ulm University (Germany), the University of Tartu (Estonia) and Vilnius University (Lithuania). The project, Politicised Medicine, has the aim to host a series of online lectures and discussions about the impact of East European dictatorships have had on medicine in various countries.

The lectures will analyse various Eastern European dictatorships from a comparative perspective: the USSR (highlighting the Latvian, Estonian and Lithuanian SSRs), the Polish People's Republic and the German Democratic Republic. Taking a comparative approach enables a description of similarities and differences in order to present reliable conclusions about a medical practice politicised by Eastern European dictatorships.

A meeting by the project team will be held in Riga from 12 to 14 August 2020 to discuss the organisation of the online events that are scheduled for September and October. The outcomes of the research will be published in the edition of Acta Medico-historica Rigensia.

The times of the lectures will be announced individually: www.ishm2020.com

Anyone who is interested is welcome to participate in the online lecture series in September and October 2020!

Financial support for the project of the Baltic-German University Liaison Office is provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) using the funding allocated by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.
