About Study Course
Objective
To ensure acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accordance with the Regulations of Pediatric Specialty that comply with the general concept of children’s health, strengthening of it, illnesses and prevention, early diagnostics and treatment, including emergency conditions, rehabilitation, specialist consultations, proper completion of medical records in primary healthcare and acquisition of operating principles of general practice.
Learning outcomes
1.During acquisition of the study course residents acquire basic knowledge on a healthy child, health promotion, most common childhood diseases, study their causes, pathogenesis, clinical expressions, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation in outpatient care.
1.Following acquisition of the study course the resident will be able:
• to provide qualified medical care to children in case of acute and chronic illnesses by performing diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention pursuant to the primary healthcare level, promoting children’s health, harmonious development and protection of their interests;
• within the framework of his/her speciality provide consultations to patients, their relatives and medical staff;
• to actively participate in studies on prevention of childhood illnesses, disease prevention, public health, education of unlicensed medical practitioners and medicine students, and also studies related to children’s health;
• to take a proactive role in establishing professional relations with patients and their caretakers, colleagues, having due regard to cultural and ethnical aspects, specific national and international children’s rights, code of conduct, professional secrecy and confidentiality;
• to avoid unnecessary examinations, unjustified treatment and unnecessary hospitalisation of a child;
• to work in a team, to collaborate with parents and other social groups;
• to perform manipulations provided for in the regulations of speciality, including acquisition of primary healthcare:
o Aquisition of anamnesis and undergoing physical examination of a child
Feeding
Newborn skin and mucous membrane care
Umbilical cord care
Calculation of nutrients and caloric value for children of different ages
Children’s physical development measurements and their evaluation
Behaviour assessment
Assessment of physical and mental development
Assessment of sexual maturity
Assessment of hip joints
Oral hygiene.
1.Upon successful completion of the study course the resident acquires mandatory competence of a certified paediatrician. The required competence level varies for various childhood illnesses. Considering the diversity of activities of a primary care physician, a resident must acquire competence to be able to apply necessary outpatient care for illnesses covered by the residency program (see full residency program), emphasising promotion of health and prevention of illnesses, including immunisation, proper care and nutrition of children, physical and mental development, emergency medicine in acute cases, collaboration with specialists in cases of chronic diseases, indications for hospitalisation.
The competences given below are important but not comprehensive (the scope of competences can be extended should there be any preconditions for that during the studies) and should be acquired in connection with a patient of the respective speciality, his/her parents, activities of healthcare specialists and type of healthcare organisation:
To consult patients and their families
• to write anamnesis;
• to carry out physical examination based upon patient’s age;
• to assess growth and development;
• to perform dietary assessment;
• to assess mental state;
• to carry out clinical evaluation and make decisions;
• to provide explanations and consultations;
• to encourage and provide professional support.
To evaluate clinical exposure, order examination, diagnose and agree on a treatment plan
• to recognise and evaluate the severity of clinical presentation;
• to create differential diagnosis;
• to consider child protection issues;
• to order necessary examination and to interpret test results;
• to consult with multidisciplinary specialists;
• to agree on an appropriate health management plan with patients and their caretakers.
