Objective

To teach students to access the client's health status and need for first aid, to handle emergency, life-threatening situations prior to the arrival of medical practitioners, to be able activate the emergency system inside and outside the hospital, according to the situation.

Prerequisites

Secondary school level biology and anatomy.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After finishing the study course, students will be able to describe the first aid objectives and tasks, the first aid methods and basic principles of emergency care, will be able to name and describe the steps of patient's (victims) survey during pre-hospital phase, describe measures needed to stop bleeding, knows anti-shock measures, immobilisation methods in case of injuries, providing first aid in different situations.

Skills

Students will be able to perform basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, identify signs of clinical and biological death, provide first aid in case of aspiration with foreign body, artificial respiration and indirect heart massage, demonstrate the ability to work according teamwork principles within their competence; will be able to assess emergency patients, to use appropriate equipment and materials.

Competence

Students will be able to provide first aid, to perform a patient (victim) investigation in the prehospital phase, to analyze the situation, to apply the basic algorithm of resuscitation and other first aid guidelines, to evaluate the impact of environmental physical factors on the human body and health.
