About Study Course
Objective
To provide the acquirement and the mastering of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in infectious diseases according to the regulation requirements of the Family Physician speciality, to train a specialist who is able to ensure consistent, continuous and comprehensive care of the patient and his/her family members and to help the patient to make a choice between services offered in health care, ensuring abilities of patients for better physical, mental and social action, a specialist is able to assess health condition of the patient, to diagnose illnesses and to treat according stated competences. To train a physician for the certification in a Family Physician speciality according the regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

1.Skills to be strengthen during educational programme of family medicine - methods of examination, treatment, at measures of disease prevention and health promotion:
Health check-up and related consultations:
- knowledge on methods of diagnostics,
- assessment of physical working capacity,
- explanation of tobacco hazard,
- sexual education,
- consulting in cases of psychological problems, stress management,
- education on hormone replacing therapy for women at menopause,
Laboratory tests:
- blood: haemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocytes, ESR,
- leukogram, sugar level, CRP,
-assessment of urine analysis (specific gravity, pH, colour, sugar, protein, bilirubin, ketone bodies, acetone, nitrites, sediment),
- faeces (coprogram, parasites, blood),
- sputum (bacterioscopic examination),
- analysis of gynaecological smear: level of vaginal cleanliness (vaginosis, trichomoniasis, gonorrhoea, candida).
Other manipulations:
- injections (intramuscular, venous),
- examination of rectum and prostate palpation,
- skin biopsy sample taking
- taking sample of bacteriological material in cases of urogenital tract infections.
1.Is able to independently formulate and critically analyse complicated scientific and professional problems. Knowledge and skills of the family physician become apparent in six basic competences:
1. Organization / management of primary health care,
2. Person-oriented care,
3. Specific problem-solving skills
4. Comprehensive approach to problem solving,
5. Community-oriented health care,
6. Holistic approach.
Competences acquired allow to fortify decisions, to make additional analysis if necessary:
- Is able to explain the impact of environmental changes on spread of a disease on the population, to understand the usage of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic methods in this aspect.
- Is able to evaluate patient's complaints, their relation to patient's health condition. Has got a wide understanding on diseases and their risk factors, on widespread diseases among the population, care of chronic diseases, on diseases which causes disability, on conditions which require emergency help.
- Has got an understanding on usage of preventive and diagnostic manipulations in primary health care which includes nearly all specialities (i.e. paediatrics, gynaecology, surgery, ear, nose and throat diseases, dermato-venereology, ophthalmology, psychiatry, cardiology).
- Ability to ensure treatment for the patient at the level of primary care, organize rehabilitation if necessary.
- An understanding on diagnostic opportunities in primary and secondary health care level, on opportunities to send the patient to physician specialist if necessary.
- Ability to organize and lead consultations in issues of health care organization.
- An understanding on issues of public health.
- Ability to understand significance of positive physician-patient relationships, to teach patients to understand their complaints, learn to coexist along with those.
- Ability to work in a team with other members of the primary health care team and other specialists.
- An understanding on issues of health care organization on the whole and in particular of the primary health care organization.
- Knowledge on legislation and directives in the health care, an ability to participate in developing them.
