Objective

To ensure the acquisition and development of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accordance with the requirements of the hepatology specialty in order to prepare the doctor for certification in the specialty of a hepatologist, in accordance with the regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia and the gastrohepatology programme of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (www.eubog.org).

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.To demonstrate in-depth and extended knowledge and understanding of liver diseases and manifestations of other organ diseases in hepatology in patients of different ages, diagnosis, treatment and prevention thereof, which provides a basis for creative thinking in clinical practice and partly also in research, as well as the ability to work in interdisciplinary interactions.

Skills

1.To independently apply medical problem-solving skills to perform the professional functions of a highly qualified specialist in hepatology in disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, care; perform practical manipulations skilfully; be able to function in a health care organisation as well as in education and research; independently formulate and critically analyse complex clinical medical problems; adequately evaluate research in the field of medical science; perform additional analysis as necessary to substantiate decisions; to integrate the knowledge of different fields of medicine, e.g., surgery, radiology, oncology; gather experience and contribute to the creation of new knowledge, development of research methods or methods of specialist’s professional activity; demonstrate understanding and ethical responsibility for the potential impact of the results of professional practice, clinical or scientific research on patients and society.

Competence

1.To explain and discuss complex or systemic aspects of hepatology and general aspects of medical science in a reasoned manner with both health specialists and lay people; patients; the public; to maintain collegial relationships and participate in teamwork, i.e, the ability to work as a hepatologist in a specialised gastroenterology or internal medicine unit, as well as independently, to consult hospital patients and outpatients, and to provide emergency hepatological assistance in critical situations; to plan and organise independently the development of one’s professional competence as a specialist doctor; to take responsibility for the performance of teams of staff and performance analysis; be able to perform entrepreneurial activities, innovations in the activities of the respective speciality; be able to provide emergency medical assistance, to perform work, further learning or research in complex and unpredictable conditions and, if necessary, to modify them using new approaches; represent the interests of the speciality in public and organise working groups, seminars and activities oriented towards the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of liver diseases.
