Objective

To systematise and classify expanded and evidence-based knowledge in nutrition studies, taking into account the latest and most up-to-date research in nutrition studies. To understand a person’s dietary options in different physiological conditions, different ages and physical loads. To provide knowledge about nutrition in disease prevention. To be able to assess the necessary nutrition transformation over time, recommended nutritional norms in different age groups in Latvia and the world.

Prerequisites

Course completion shall have indispensable basic knowledge in human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, in particular on energy metabolism and metabolism of macronutrients: carbohydrates, fats and proteins; understanding of the structure and functioning of the human body during exercise; basic knowledge of health training and biology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.After completion of the study course, the student shall:
1. Describes the basic principles of healthy eating and nutrition recommendations for different populations.
2. Explains the role of macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) and micronutrients (vitamins and mineral wool), as well as water in the human body and exercise.
3. Describes the principles of energy change and the role of nutrition in ensuring physical health, health and body recovery.

Skills

1.After completion of the study course, the student shall:
4. The necessity of energy and nutrients shall be calculated according to age, sex, physical activity and type of sport.
5. Analyse the composition of the diet and assess its compliance with the recommendations of healthy eating and sports nutrition.
6. Plan a balanced menu or nutrition plan, taking into account physical load and the body’s needs.
7. Scientific-based sources of information shall be used in the analysis of nutritional issues.

Competence

1.After completion of the study course, the student shall:
8. The effects of nutrition on health, physical health and athletic performance shall be evaluated.
9. Justify dietary recommendations for different groups of physical activity and athletes using evidence-based information.
10. Make informed decisions regarding the choice of nutrition and are able to critically evaluate the information available in the public space regarding nutrition and food supplements.
