Objective

Acquire and improve theoretical knowledge and practical skills in respiratory system diseases.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Upon completion of the pulmonology course, using acquired knowledge and understanding, resident will be able to:
1) explain the mechanism of action, indications, side effects and contraindications of the most frequently used medication groups in pulmonology;
2) assess the patient’s vital signs and interpret the results of pulmonary examination;
3) order appropriate diagnostic tests and interpret the results;
4) define differential diagnoses;
5) appoint an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Skills

1.Upon completion of the pulmonology course, using acquired knowledge and understanding, resident will be able to :
1) summarize key information regarding patient’s physical examination and additional diagnostic tests;
2) apply appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment methods;
3) perform pulmonary function tests and interpret the results;
4) perform thoracentesis (pleural puncture), order and interpret the results of pleural fluid analysis;
5) perform arterial blood gas sampling and interpret the results;
6) present a pulmonary patient during morning rounds, professors’ visits, consilium;
7) develop a treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Competence

1.Using the acquired knowledge and skills resident will be able to define a diagnosis, make differential diagnosis, interpret test data, develop a structured treatment and rehabilitation plan, logically define and explain the treatment objectives, assess its effectiveness, side effects.
