Objective

To provide medical residents with opportunities to acquire and improve theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the care of patients with neurological and musculoskeletal diseases and health conditions in order to prepare them to successfully pass the certification examination in the specialty of a doctor of physical and rehabilitation medicine, in accordance with laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Theoretical knowledge of the principles of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular rehabilitation, aetiology of diseases, prevalence, clinical manifestations, rehabilitation interventions, indications and contraindications thereof.
The medical resident will be able to name, define, classify and describe the most common neurological and musculoskeletal diseases that result in permanent and disabling health impairments in patients.

Skills

1.The medical resident will be able: to assess patients of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular rehabilitation;
to analyse and interpret assessment results;
to predict and evaluate the late outcomes;
to develop an individual rehabilitation plan, using evidence-based interventions and technologies;
to identify risk factors for complications and develop a complication prevention plan;
to assess the duration, content of the patient’s rehabilitation, outcomes thereof, and the need for dynamic monitoring;
to use the International Classification of Functioning.

Competence

1.The medical resident will be able:
to use the acquired knowledge planning the necessary rehabilitation and dynamic monitoring in the future;
to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation plan starting from the acute stage of treatment;
to predict late treatment and rehabilitation outcomes;
to evaluate the achieved rehabilitation outcomes;
to lead the multiprofessional rehabilitation team;
to develop a plan of preventive measures.
