Objective

The aim of the state placement is to strengthen the students' theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired during the study program Pharmacy. In accordance with the requirements of Directive 2005/36 / EC on the recognition of professional qualifications, the placement lasts 6 months and takes place at community or hospital pharmacy. State placement is divided into 4 sections with different CP amounts, trying to observe the real application of each section in the work of a pharmacist (Practical and social pharmacy (15 CP, 15 weeks), pharmaceutical analysis (5 CP, 5 weeks), pharmaceutical compounding (4 CP, 4 weeks, hospital pharmacy (2 CP, 2 weeks).The content and organization of each section is determined by the internship program of the respective section.
In the section of Practical and Social Pharmacy - knowledge and skills acquired in such study courses as practical pharmacy and pharmaceutical legislation, social pharmacy and pharmaceutical care, pharmaceutical pharmacology, pharmacotherapy in pharmacist practice, pharmaceutical and medical chemistry are applied.
In the section of Pharmaceutical compounding theoretical knowledge and skills acquired in such study courses as pharmacy dosage formu technology, industrial dosage form technology, physical pharmacy, higher mathematics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical pharmacology, pharmacotherapy in pharmacist practice are applied. This section of the placement does not need to be mastered by FFN students, as it is equated with what has been learned in college.
In the section of Pharmaceutical Analysis theoretical knowledge and skills obtained in such study courses as inorganic and organic chemistry, qualitative and quantitative analysis, pharmaceutical chemistry, physical pharmacy are applied.
In the section of Hospital pharmacy the theoretical knowledge and skills acquired in such study courses as practical pharmacy, social pharmacy and pharmaceutical care, pharmacy dosage form technology are applied.

Prerequisites

All study courses acquired in the study program Pharmacy from the 1st-4th study year.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Practical and social pharmacy section – knows, is able to present and perform the circulation of medicines in the health care system, is able to correctly, clearly and unambiguously explain the effect, use, metabolism, side effects of medicines, provide answers to questions related to medicines, both healthcare professionals and non-specialists.
Pharmaceutical analysis section – knows, is able to present and perform methods of analysis and determination of the value of medicines and is able to evaluate the quality of medicines prepared in a pharmacy.
Pharmaceutical compounding section – knows and is able to explain the principles and methods of drug preparation in a pharmacy, organization of compounding in a pharmacy, is able to independently prepare all dosage forms, knows the incompatibility of different ingredients.
Hospital pharmacy section – knows and is able to explain the circulation of medicines in a hospital pharmacy, the tasks of a hospital pharmacist.

Skills

Practical and social pharmacy section – is able to independently analyze complex situations and make decisions when providing and organizing pharmaceutical care. Able to follow changes in the legislation of the Republic of Latvia, which regulates activities in the field of pharmacy, and comply with them in pharmacist's work. Is able to apply the basic principles of business and marketing in pharmaceutical activities and use the information technologies necessary for professional activities.
Pharmaceutical analysis section – able to independently analyze complex situations and make decisions about the quality of medicines prepared in a pharmacy.
Pharmaceutical compounding section – able to independently analyze complex situations in the preparation of dosage forms and make decisions when performing technological operations. Able to develop dosage forms.
Hospital pharmacy section – able to distinguish the peculiarities of the operation of a hospital pharmacy in contrast to community pharmacy.

Competence

Will be able to promote the development of pharmaceutical care and increase the prestige of the profession of pharmacist, participate in the discussion of important public decisions for the pharmacy.
Within the scope of their competence, will be able to promote a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention, paying special attention to the risk groups of the population; to perform express diagnostics, to be a full member of the health care team and to co-operate with other health care specialists on the principles of mutual respect.
Will be able to take responsibility for their continuous professional development as a mandatory duty of every pharmacist and find the opportunity to regularly participate in further education activities.
