Objective

To ensure acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in thoracic surgery according to the requirements of the thoracic surgery speciality regulations to prepare doctors for certification in the speciality of thoracic surgery according to regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Able to demonstrate in-depth or extended knowledge and understanding, part of which are in line with the latest discoveries in the respective field of science or professional area and lay the foundation for creative thinking or research, including when working in-between different sectors
- interpret US, CT and MRI pathology changes in the organs of the abdominal cavity
- the clinical picture, treatment tactics and techniques of acute diseases of the abdominal cavity (acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, acute pancreatitis, complicated ulcer disease, incarcerated hernia)
- possible complications in the remote post-operative period, their diagnosis and treatment.

Skills

1.Able to independently use the theory, methods and problem solving skills in order to conduct research or artistic work, and highly qualified professional functions.
Able to reasonably explain and discuss complicated or systemic aspects of the respective field of science or professional area with both specialists and non-specialists.
Able to independently drive the improvement of one’s competences and specialisation, to take responsibility for the performance and analysis of teams of staff, to do business, innovations in the respective field or profession, to work, do research or further learning in complicated and unpredictable conditions and to transform them using new approaches, when needed
- to examine a patient with abdominal pathology (trauma and disease)
- to provide first and emergency qualified aid to patients
- to interpret the results of diagnostic methods used (clinical tests, radiology, etc.) and examinations.

Competence

1.Able to independently formulate and critically analyse complicated scientific and professional problems, to substantiate decisions, and to conduct additional analysis, if needed.
Able to integrate knowledge from different fields, make a contribution to the creation of new knowledge, development of research or professional activity methods, to demonstrate understanding and ethical responsibility for the potential impact of scientific results or professional activity.
