Objective

The aim of the programme is to provide students with opportunities to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in field of traumatology and orthopaedics, to prepare doctor for independent work and certification exam in specialty, according to knowledge required in normative acts of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.At the end of the studies, student will show knowledge and comprehension about children and adult musculoskeletal trauma and orthopedics problems, acute surgical and internal medicine conditions. Will be able to examine patient independently, critically evaluate their symptoms, define the diagnosis and substantiate it. Will explain chosen treatment methods and describe and explain principles of his action.

Skills

1.1. After gathering patients clinical and additional examination data, student will be able to make a proper diagnosis and choose treatment method:
a) Get patient's medical history
b) Make a plan for examinations needed
c) Evaluate gained radiological and clinical data
2. Apply treatment methods:
a) Use appropriate transport immobilization
b) Do puncture of large joints and cavities; do closed fracture and dislocation reposition, apply adequate immobilization
c) Define indications for applying external fixator and be able to apply it
d) Do primary or secondary wound closure, skin flap plastic
e) Do tendon suture or plastic
f) Do debridement and amputation of extremity
g) Choose adequate fixation (osteosynthesis) of fracture, and be able to perform it
h) Choose adequate treatment method for treating pseudarthrosis.
2. Be able to diagnose infection of musculoskeletal system and joints (septic arthritis, osteomyelitis) and choose proper conservative or surgical treatment method.
3. Recognize different bone and soft tissue tumours, either benign or malignant. Make an examination plan for getting precise diagnosis and choose proper conservative or surgical treatment method.
4. Will be able to timely recognize systemic and local treatment complications and prevent them or choose proper treatment.
5. Will be able to predict outcome in patients with musculoskeletal trauma depending on its severity.

Competence

1.Will be able to analyze, see interrelationship, evaluate and solve problems in field of traumatology and orthopaedics, in highest professional level, by increasing knowledge in specific and related fields.
a) Be able to make proper diagnosis in patients with musculoskeletal trauma and related diseases
b) recognize different systemic and local complications of musculoskeletal trauma and diseases,
c) evaluate gained examination data,
d) do differential diagnosis between orthopaedic diseases,
e) make proper treatment plan based on gained objective data,
f) explain chosen treatment method,
g) evaluate results of chosen treatment method.
