Objective

To familiarise students with the foundations and main directions of the history and theory of world film art in order to ensure the broadening of the general humanitarian vision of students, as well as to familiarise themselves with the basic principles, functions and major stylistic directions of the language of the mass communication medium cinema, as well as the dominant theoretical concepts. Knowledge gained from the course will deepen understanding of the history of modern communication and media, as well as the importance in the context of European and global cultural development.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Upon completion of the course, students shall:
• Recognises and understands the key stages and stylistic directions of the development of cinema art
• Analyses the interaction between the development of film art and society.
• Name and describe the main directions of cinema art, as well as theoretical analysis approaches.
• Understand the principles of the design of the cinema language and their use at different time periods and in the traditions of different national schools.

Skills

1.• Recognises various schools of film art.
• Assess the impact of film art on today’s mass media.
• Analyse cinema authors and film art samples.
• Interprets the impact of film art on public communication.
• Uses approaches to movie arts messages in multimedia communication.

Competence

1.• Evaluate audiovisual works in films that have been produced over different periods of time.
• Can recognise different uses of cinema language.
• Know how to navigate classic principles of cinema as well as their alternative use of modernist principles.
• Understand the key stages of the development of film art and the prevailing stylistic principles.
• Can see the link between contemporary audiovisual culture and major stages of the development of cinema art and the theoretical and practical achievements made during different periods
