The conference at the RSU Institute of Stomatology will bring together internationally renowned experts from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Brazil), one of the world’s leading institutions for fluoride research, alongside Latvian experts specialising in antimicrobial resistance.
The aim of the conference is to discuss evidence-based fluoride use in caries prevention, biofilm formation, and the challenges of antimicrobial resistance in dentistry.

In 2025, a fluoride analysis laboratory was established and equipped at the RSU Institute of Stomatology. In collaboration with the UNICAMP, internationally recognised methods for determining fluoride have been adopted and validated. Also, research has been launched on fluoride concentrations in toothpastes, the bioavailability of fluoride from toothpastes, the impact of shelf life on fluoride concentration in toothpastes, and on fluoride levels in drinking water in Latvia. In addition, capacity is being developed to ensure quality in clinical studies (precise monitoring of the components used in interventions).
This conference is part of a series of activities by visiting professors from Brazil, during which the launched collaboration will be developed further to ensure the most effective use of the fluoride laboratory in research at all levels, from undergraduate and doctoral students to clinical studies. Alongside fluoride research, Prof. Pedro Ricomini is an internationally recognised researcher in the fields of oral biofilms and antimicrobial resistance. He is engaged in international collaborative initiatives that bring together researchers from Europe, North America, South America, and Asia to study the mechanisms for the development of resistance and to design evidence-based strategies for its prevention. His visit to Latvia will also provide an opportunity to strengthen collaboration in this highly important research field for public health, where closer cooperation between dentistry, microbiology, and pharmacology is required.
