Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) will once again participate in the Lampa conversation festival this year. All interested parties are invited to the stage Uzzibsnī, where researchers from the RSU Faculty of Social Sciences will host a discussion ‘Climate Thinking - an Elite Privilege?’ in Cēsis Castle Park on 10 July from 20:00 to 21:00. The discussion will take place in Latvian, and be streamed live.
At a time when war continues near Latvia’s borders and living costs are rising, people often wonder whether climate change is currently a priority issue. Research conducted by the RSU Faculty of Social Sciences in GreenCare, CLINAP, and CLIMYTH projects show that the climate discourse in Latvia is largely driven by specific groups of society - experts, activists, and academics, while to the broader public, climate policy often seems distant, abstract, or even unfair due to the associated additional costs.
The focus of the discussion
- How to talk about climate change at a time when people’s attention is preoccupied with existential crises, security, and economic challenges?
- Is climate policy in Latvia developed fairly enough, considering the differing opportunities of the population?
- Why is there a lack of personal engagement in mitigating climate change within society?
About the discussion
The aim of the event is not to find a single 'correct' answer, but to foster an open dialogue among diverse experiences and perspectives, as well as to discuss how to balance today’s security and economic needs with long-term climate goals.
