German Ambassador Gudrun Masloch visits RSU to learn about medical education
On Wednesday, 15 October, Gudrun Masloch, Ambassador of Germany to Latvia, and Beate Kirch, Head of Legal and Consular Department at the Embassy of Germany, visited the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Medical Education Technology Centre (METC).
During the visit, the ambassador met with RSU management and students and explored the University’s modern study facilities and simulation technologies, which allow students to acquire practical skills in a realistic environment.
The delegation observed a demonstration of the METC simulation equipment and learned about the military medicine training opportunities implemented at RSU in collaboration with the National Armed Forces. The visit also included discussions on collaboration between RSU and Germany in medical education, research, and graduate employment.
Currently, 543 students from Germany study at RSU
For more than 15 years, RSU has admitted students from Germany, and their number has now reached 543 – accounting for 18% of the total number of international students at the University. RSU’s study programmes in English award a medical diploma recognised across the European Union, enabling graduates to pursue their careers successfully both in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.
The guests showed interest in the development of the RSU Stade Branch in Germany and discussed opportunities to strengthen connections with German students after graduation, facilitating their integration into academic and professional networks.
Scientific collaboration – from chronic fatigue syndrome to antibiotic resistance
The scientific collaboration between German and Latvian researchers focuses on several important areas, including chronic fatigue syndrome, paediatric oncology, antibiotic resistance, and other joint projects with the Heidelberg University and other partners. Currently, RSU’s teaching staff includes 31 visiting lecturers from Germany, while 14 employees work at the RSU Stade Branch. This collaboration strengthens the University’s positions in the international academic environment and supports European-scale solutions to public health challenges.
At the end of the visit, the ambassador emphasised that RSU has become one of the most important bridges for academic collaboration in medical education between Germany and Latvia, welcoming both the University’s modern infrastructure and its international student community.
