How science can shape Latvian sport: RSU invites to discussion forum Science for the Development of Sport in Latvia
On 26 November, the discussion forum Science for the Development of Sport in Latvia will take place at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) sports centre, 3 Cigoriņu iela, from 9:00 to 16:30 (with discussions starting from 9:30) where researchers, policymakers, local municipality representatives and sports industry professionals will discuss how the latest research and recommendations can be transformed into practical solutions for the development of sport in Latvia. The forum will focus on young people’s health and safety in sport, access to adapted sport, healthy physical activity, sports infrastructure and the use of technology.
The discussion will be livestreamed.
The forum will be based on the findings of the #IMRSportsLV project as part of the Sports state research programme, and the recommendations developed by the researchers. In a series of moderated discussions, the research findings will be a platform for dialogue between scientists, decision-makers and those responsible for putting the recommendations into practice.
The aim of the forum is to promote the data- and science-based decision-making to make Latvia’s sports system healthier, safer, more accessible and more sustainable. At the same time, the forum will highlight the importance of sports science not only in high-performance sport, but also in promoting public health, supporting local municipalities and shaping sports policy.
The first discussion will focus on children and young people’s health, safety and long-term development in sport. Researchers, policymakers, healthcare professionals, coaches and representatives of sports organisations will explore how to apply the latest research findings to improve training methods, minimise health risks and develop the youth sports system.
The second discussion will address solutions for developing an accessible and sustainable adapted sports system for children, young people and adults with disabilities.
Meanwhile, the third discussion will address the impact of physical activity on health and the need for systematic health risk assessment in recreational sport. Experts will discuss the limits of healthy physical activity, appropriate physical exertion for different population groups, and ways to promote safe participation in sport.
The closing discussion will focus on the socioeconomic indicators of the sports sector, access to infrastructure and the efficient use of resources.
Alongside the discussions, a sports science and technology exhibition (EXPO) will be open at the forum from 9:30 to 16:30, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the technological solutions and research achievements developed as part of the #IMRSportsLV project.
The forum Science for the Development of Sport in Latvia will highlight the contribution of RSU and its partners to the advancement of sports science in Latvia, generating knowledge with practical application in protecting athletes’ health, supporting the work of sports organisations and shaping national sports policy.
