More than 180 young doctors graduate from RSU residency programmes

On 25 September, a residency graduation ceremony took place in the Great Hall of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), bringing together 183 young doctors graduating from 52 specialities, along with their teaching staff and the university’s management.

At the graduation ceremony, congratulatory remarks were delivered by Rector Professor Aigars Pētersons, Minister for Health of the Republic of Latvia Hosam Abu Meri, Member of the Board of the Latvian Medical Association Anda Nulle, and Member of the Board of the Latvian Young Doctors Association Anna Klēšmite-Blūma. The ceremony concluded with an address by Ineta Derjabo, Member of the Board of Riga East University Hospital, while general practitioner Daina Malinsa delivered words of thanks on behalf of the residents. 

Among this year’s residency programme graduates, internal medicine and related specialities are the most widely represented, with 52 graduates, including 19 general practitioners. There are 25 graduates in surgery and surgical specialities. A further 25 graduates are anaesthetists, intensive care specialists, pain management specialists, emergency medicine physicians and physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians. In diagnostics, laboratory medicine and radiology, there are 21 residency graduates, with the same number in psychiatry and mental health specialities. There are a total of 10 residency graduates in dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery, while paediatrics and related specialities have nine graduates. In certain specialities, there is only one graduate this year – this is the case in oncology and chemotherapy, occupational health, sexology and sexopathology, paediatric infectious diseases, dietetics and neurophysiology. 

Following six years of medical studies, residency training lasts between three and six years, depending on the chosen core speciality. 

RSU is the leading institution of higher medical education in Latvia, with the largest number of fully qualified doctors graduating from its programmes each year. At the graduation ceremony, the resident doctors received diplomas certifying completion of the Residency in Medicine study programme, as well as their specific specialisation and qualification. 

RSU residency study programmes are led by leading specialists in their respective fields in Latvia. The programmes include practical training, as well as simulation-based training and hands-on procedures. Research is an integral part of the programmes.
