National Guard Commander visits RSU to discuss cooperation in student training and military medicine
This week, Brigadier General Aivars Krjukovs, Commander of the National Guard of the Republic of Latvia, visited the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Medical Education Technology Centre to discuss cooperation opportunities with the university’s leadership regarding student involvement in national defence, the development of military medicine training, and the implementation of joint initiatives.
During the meeting, RSU Rector Prof. Aigars Pētersons introduced General Krjukovs to the university’s scientific achievements and study environment opportunities, and emphasised the importance of simulation-based education across various RSU study programmes. The discussion placed particular emphasis on the possibility of developing solutions that would allow students to balance their studies with service in the National Guard and to develop an approach similar to the so-called dual career model in sports.
Prof. Vladimirs Voicehovskis, a representative of the RSU Faculty of Medicine, presented the history of the introduction of the military medicine course at RSU and its importance in preparing future medical professionals. Meanwhile, representatives of RSU leadership informed the National Guard Commander about plans to develop the coordination of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) training in Latvia.
The meeting also addressed potential cooperation in organising joint National Guard and RSU hackathons to promote the development of innovative solutions in the fields of defence, medicine, and technology.
After the discussions, the delegation visited the RSU METC, where they learned about the simulation environment and observed practical demonstrations in smoke-filled simulation zones.
