Through the merger of two leading national scientific institutions – the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis and the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre – the National Research and Innovation Institute (NIRI) has been established and now operational.

The institute was inaugurated on 1 June, bringing together representatives from science, higher education, healthcare, public administration, and business. The new research institution is envisioned to operate as a strong national research centre, employing several hundred researchers.

Among those offering their congratulations was RSU Rector Professor Aigars Pētersons (pictured first from the right), who wished the new institute every success:

‘May the newly established institute become a powerful platform for collaboration, new ideas and internationally significant achievements, advancing research excellence in Latvia and serving the public good!’

Benefits for higher education and early-career researchers

RSU regards this development as particularly significant for higher education and the advancement of early-career researchers. The new institute will provide an even stronger environment for students, doctoral candidates and young scientists, thereby strengthening Latvia’s competitiveness within the European Research Area. It will offer broader opportunities to engage in high-level research and build professional careers in Latvia.

Collaboration as the foundation of excellence

NIRI demonstrates that the most significant achievements emerge through collaboration between universities, research institutions, public authorities and industry. The establishment of the new institute will enhance the excellence and international competitiveness of Latvian research.

RSU places a particularly high value on an interdisciplinary approach, where healthcare, technology, data, and social sciences form a unified innovation ecosystem for the benefit of society.

We are confident that NIRI will become a platform for new ideas, ambitious projects, and internationally significant accomplishments.
