#BeActive Day on 23 September: take part in sports activities at new RSU sports centre and at Uzvaras Park
On Wednesday, 23 September, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) invites everyone to participate in free sports activities as part of #BeActive Day at two locations – the new RSU Sports Centre at 3 Cigoriņu iela and at Uzvaras Park. Participants will be able to try out various workouts, learn running and Nordic walking techniques, and find out more about physical activity and sports opportunities for different fitness levels.
#BeActive Day is a chance not only to get moving but also to gain a better understanding of sport and find a way to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. RSU activities will be led by lecturers from the Academy of Sport and coaches from the RSU Sports Club.
Open training sessions at the new RSU sports centre
At the new RSU Sports Centre at 3 Cigoriņu iela in Riga, the RSU Sports Club, in cooperation with #BeActive Day, invites you to explore the centre’s new facilities and try out a variety of activities free of charge. This is an opportunity not only to see the new sports infrastructure but also to try out some of the training sessions that will be available to the Sports Club visitors.
The day programme includes a range of training sessions, from strength and interval training to functional training and more relaxing mind-body practices.
- 7:00 – 8:00
Strength training led by coach Mārtiņš Markovs. The session will involve the use of gym equipment to develop strength, endurance, stability and movement quality. The training is suitable for different fitness levels. - 7:00 – 7:50
Interval training led by coach Agija Ankevica. A dynamic workout to develop strength and endurance using body weight and a variety of equipment. - 8:00 – 8:45
Deep core training (Super Core) led by coach Agija Ankevica. The session will focus on strengthening the deep core muscles, with particular attention to the stabilising muscles of the abdomen, back and pelvis. - 17:15 – 17:55
Functional training led by coach Daina Rodke. The session will combine different types of exercise and make use of a wide range of equipment, including dumbbells, resistance bands, kettlebells and TRX - 18:15 – 19:00
Body & Mind led by coach Daina Rodke. The session will combine low-intensity movement and mobility exercises with meditation to relax the body and calm the mind.
Participation in the training sessions is free of charge, but places are limited – each session can accommodate 12-14 participants.
Please come to the training sessions in sportswear, bringing water, a towel and a change of sports shoes. The Body & Mind session will be held barefoot.
#BeActive Day activities in Uzvaras Park
At Uzvaras Park, next to the outdoor fitness area, the RSU Academy of Sport also invites everyone interested to take part in the open training sessions. The sessions led by lecturers from the RSU Academy of Sport will provide a chance not only to try out the activities but also to learn practical, evidence-based recommendations on various forms of physical activity.
- 18:00 – 19:00
Running lab. Led by researcher Daido Dagne Brūvere, participants will learn about warm-up and mobility exercises, as well as find out more about running shoes and the latest trends in running. - 18:30 – 19:30
Nordic Walking basics and technique. Led by Assoc. Prof. Baiba Smila, participants will have the chance to learn proper and effective Nordic walking technique. If you have your own poles, please bring them along. - 19:00 – 20:00
Outdoor fitness equipment. Led by lecturer Mārtiņš Mellakauls, participants will learn how to use outdoor fitness equipment effectively and safely, and how to adapt the exercises to the individual abilities.
Participation in the activities at Uzvaras Park is free of charge, no prior registration is required.

#BeActive Day is a Europe-wide initiative that brings together sports clubs, educational institutions, businesses and other organisations every year to inspire people to get more moving through a variety of activities. As every year, on 23 September, various free sports and physical activity events will take place across Latvia, with the aim to raise public awareness of the positive impact of movement on physical and mental health.
