RSU beach volleyball players win the European Universities Games title

Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) athletes have concluded their participation in the European Universities Games (EUSA Games), held in Italy's Province of Salerno from 18 July to 1 August, with impressive results. The highlight of the Games was the triumph of RSU beach volleyball players Atvars Ozoliņš and Gustavs Auziņš in the men's tournament, where they won the European Universities Games title in beach volleyball.

In total, Latvia was represented at these Games by 14 students from two universities – RSU and the University of Latvia (UL). Alongside the RSU gold medals in beach volleyball, UL athletes won two bronze medals in the men’s and women’s beach volleyball tournaments.

Ozoliņš and Auziņš – convincing champions of the European University Games

The RSU beach volleyball duo, Atvars Ozoliņš and Gustavs Auziņš, delivered a consistent and convincing performance throughout the tournament, which culminated in a 2:0 (21:14, 21:19) victory in the final and gold medals, beating the strong Czech Technical University players Tomas Semerad and Adam Stocek.

‘The tournament was very intense and physically demanding for us, played in hot weather. So, we are particularly delighted that we managed to stay focused, fight until the very end and win the final,’ said Atvars Ozoliņš and Gustavs Auziņš after their victory.

RSU women’s basketball team reaches the Round of 16

The RSU women's 3x3 basketball team also took part at the Games with Una Šteinharde, Samanta Gabranova, Paula Cīrša and Luīze Šepte.

In the group stage, the RSU players secured three wins from four games, including a dramatic 17:16 victory over Nantes Université of France and finishing second in their group to qualify for the round of 16.

In the elimination game, the RSU team narrowly lost 12:16 to representatives of Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas from Ukraine, finishing the tournament in a shared ninth place.

European University Games bring together thousands of athletes

The European University Games are the largest university sports event in Europe, bringing together student athletes from across Europe every two years. A total of 4,000 athletes took part in this year’s Games, representing more than 170 universities from 32 European countries.

The next European University Games will be held in 2028 in Split, Croatia.
