On Sunday 4 October, the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) volleyball teams got their season off to an outstanding start at the new RSU sports centre (3 Cigoriņu iela), winning the Latvian Super Cup in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

The Robežsardze / RSU men’s team secured a convincing 3–0 victory (25–16, 25–17, 25–20) over Ezerzeme / DU / Homelike, while the RSU women’s team defeated Mārupe 3–1 (25–27, 29–27, 25–19, 26–24) in a closely fought four-set match.

Nils Daniels Prauls and Ralfs Andrejevs, players from RSU’s second student volleyball team, and its head coach, Arnis Reliņš, also contributed to the men’s team’s success.

RSU Rector Professor Aigars Pētersons and Head of the RSU Sports Club Laura Ritova attended the matches to support both teams. The new sports centre hosted the first major volleyball events of the season, which ended with two titles for the RSU teams.

‘The spark is there, and so is the desire to win and the resilience in the closing stages of each set. We just need to keep it up all season!’

said RSU women’s volleyball team captain Agija Ankevica after the victory.

Last season was particularly successful for RSU’s volleyball teams. The RSU women’s team became Latvian champions for the third consecutive time and won the Latvian Cup for the second year running. Meanwhile, the Robežsardze / RSU men’s team became Latvian champions and reached both the Latvian Cup final and the Baltic League final.

The start of this season further demonstrates the high level of skill and ambition of the RSU volleyball teams as they continue to compete for the highest honours. We are proud of our teams and wish them continued success!
