This non-profit organisation aims to strengthen professionalism in journalism and press freedom by providing popular science reporting on research findings and current media issues.

The content of the lecture for prospective and current media professionals covered media journalism and science journalism, its importance in the context of the industry and wider society, as well as EJO objectives, the international network of web portals, including the site created in Latvian.

These topics were discussed by Līga Ozoliņa, researcher and lecturer at the RSU Faculty of Communication, editor of the EJO web portal in Latvian, and Prof. Ainārs Dimants, RSU lecturer and scientific leader of the EJO project, while Tina Bettels-Schwabbauer, long-standing colleague of the German EJO, shared her experience on the potential of the Observatory in communication and media studies in Germany.

The EJO content in Latvian is available at parzurnalistiku.rsu.lv. It is expected to include not only the content produced by the organisation, but also research projects developed by Latvian journalism students. The establishment of the Latvian EJO will also provide opportunities for both prospective and current Latvian journalists to participate in international comparative research, which often attracts the attention of leading international media.

The network currently consists of partner organisations from 13 countries (Albania, USA, Czech Republic, Latvia, Great Britain, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland, Tunisia, Ukraine, Hungary, Germany), where EJO cooperates with a range of media and organisations such as journalist NGOs, universities and institutes. Recent cooperation projects include a comparative journalism study on Russia’s aggressive invasion of Ukraine and the coverage of this conflict in different EJO member countries.
