From 9 to 15 May, Gum Health Days 2026 will take place in Latvia. The event aims to raise public awareness of the importance of gum health and its impact on overall health, aesthetics, and quality of life. As part of the campaign, the Latvian Society of Periodontology (LSP), in collaboration with the Latvian Dental Students’ Association (LDSA), will organise a free gum health screening for adults on Saturday, 9 May, from 10:00 to 13:00 at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Institute of Stomatology, 20 Dzirciema iela.

In addition to the screenings at the RSU Institute of Stomatology, dentists and dental hygienists across Latvia are also invited to take part in the campaign by offering free gum health screenings in their practices.

This initiative promotes public awareness, a responsible attitude towards oral health, and closer cooperation between industry professionals and the public.

This year, the organisation of the campaign activities in Latvia is led by the Latvian Dental Students’ Association in close cooperation with the Latvian Society of Periodontology, which has been implementing this initiative in Latvia since 2019, combining experience with the energy of the new generation to achieve a common goal – strengthening public awareness of gum health.

‘Gum health is an important element not only of oral health, but also of general health. Timely diagnosis and prevention can significantly reduce the risk of serious diseases and improve quality of life.

Therefore, we are particularly pleased to see the new generation taking over the initiative with great motivation and a strong sense of responsibility, ensuring the continuity and future development of this campaign,’ notes Una Stāmere, President of the Latvian Society of Periodontology.

Gum Health Days 2026 will take place in two stages:

  1. From 11 to 15 May, dentists and dental hygienists all over Latvia are invited to voluntarily perform free gum health screenings, using recommendations and suggestions developed by the LSP (periodontologija.lv). The aim of this stage is to encourage dentists to participate in the early diagnosis of periodontal disease.
  2. On 9 May, from 10:00 to 13:00, a free gum health screening for adults will take place in Riga at the Institute of Stomatology. Applications will open on 27 April and will be available on the LSP website (periodontologija.lv) or via the link ej.uz/smaganuskrinings, as well as on the LSP and LDSA social media accounts (Facebook and Instagram @periolatvia @lzsa.latvia).

The organisers ask that patients who have already been diagnosed with gum disease and are currently undergoing treatment do not register for the screening. As part of the campaign, only the screening itself will be provided free of charge. Additional tests will be available for a fee; treatment will not be provided.

Gum Health Day is an annual international campaign organised by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) since 2014 to highlight the importance of gum health for overall health and quality of life. This year’s theme is ‘Gum Health Day: Empowering Lives’. In Latvia, the Latvian Society of Periodontology (LSP) is participating in the initiative for the seventh time, while the Latvian Dental Students’ Association (LDSA) is taking part for the first time.
