On 7 May, Anita Muižniece, Director of Rīga Stradiņš University Latvian Academy of Sport Education (RSU LASE), hosted a meeting with Raimonds Lazdiņš, President of the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC).  During the meeting, a number of topical issues were discussed, including the quality of sport education, the training of coaches, and opportunities for the education of high-level athletes in Latvia.

‘This was a valuable conversation where we agreed not only on common priorities for the development of the sports sector, but also on realistic directions for action.

The quality of coach education, the development of dual careers for high-level athletes and children's health in sports are not tasks for the future - they are today's current work,’ emphasised RSU LASE Director Anita Muižniece.

Main topics of the discussion

  • The need to review the coach qualification system, with particular focus on the quality and the role of training for Category C coaches in coach education.
  • Addressing the education of high-level athletes by developing dual career opportunities - combining professional sport with higher education.
  • RSU LASE initiatives to expand international cooperation, where LOC sees opportunities to participate as a strategic partner.

During the meeting, an agreement was reached on regular cooperation between RSU and LOC, which will help to promptly address the needs of the sports sector and promote long-term development.
