On 23 November at the autumn general meeting of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS) which is the highest decision-taking body of the LAS, Professor Sandra Lejniece of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Diseases was elected a full member or academician of the LAS and the dean of RSU Department of Doctoral Studies, the newly elected RSU rector, Professor Aigars Pētersons was elected a corresponding member of the LAS.

In order to be elected a full member or academician of the LAS, one has to be an outstanding researcher whose works are widely recognized in Latvia and abroad, whereas the corresponding members comprise researchers renown in some specific field of research who are able to provide proper representation of the given field, review research thesis and research directions of the relevant area.

The Latvian Academy of Sciences includes full members (academicians), honorary members, foreign members and corresponding members. The procedure for nominating and considering candidates, their respective numbers and the appointment procedure is governed by the LAS Charter.
