Russian military aggression in Ukraine has resulted in a large number of wounded.

Injuries sustained in war and other armed conflicts differ significantly from wounds that are treated in peacetime, and the influx of patients is much higher. This can lead to medical systems being unable to provide the necessary medical care in full.

In order to draw medical professionals’ attention to the current situation in Ukraine and to other places in Europe, as well as to gain insight into the specifics of military medicine, the Latvian Association of Microsurgery is organising the international conference Military Medicine and Reconstructive Microsurgery in the Treatment of Combat Wounds on April 20.

The conference will take place online and on-site at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Medical Education Technology Center (METC) at 26a Anniņmuizas bulvāris.

Dr. Mārtiņš Malzubris, who is one of the conference’s organisers, stresses that it is high time that all medical personnel and institutions pay close attention to how prepared medical systems are to the potential armed conflicts. ‘Participating in the conference can’t prepare anyone for situations like these, but it will provide important insights into the specifics of military medicine and lay the groundwork for further discussions,’ says Dr. Malzubris.

Doctors from Ukraine and Latvia will share their experience at the one-day conference, and Professor Alexander Lerner from Israel, a specialist recognised worldwide in field of treating combat wounds, will analyse our medical education opportunities and potential, as well as go over the specifics of psychological trauma and rehabilitation pertaining to war injuries.

The official languages of the conference are English and Russian and simultaneous translation into both languages will be provided. Participation in the conference is free of charge and requires prior registration.
