In August 2020, Riga will become a centre for the history of medicine by hosting the 47th Congress of the International Society for the History of Medicine (ISHM). The organisers of the congress are the Latvian Association of Medical Historians in cooperation with Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and Pauls Stradins Museum for the History of Medicine. The submission deadline has been extended to March 8.

The congress will be held from 24 to 28 August featuring an exciting scientific and social programme. Outstanding researchers will give keynote lectures on medical expeditions, medical treatment in the Gulag, the impact of anatomists on the danse macabre artistic genre, etc. In addition you will be able to get advice on how to win or fail to win a Nobel Prize.

Panel discussions and scientific sections will cover topical trends and issues. Along with the congress, there will be a satellite conference – Anatomy&Beyond. The conference will be dedicated to the interaction between medicine and art and how it might develop in the future.

Participants from Australia, USA, Mexico, China, Argentina, Russia and other countries have registered for the congress and submitted their abstracts. The congress is expected to gather a total of 200 participants from all over the world.

Researchers from RSU who are carrying out their research in the field of the history of medicine are welcome to get acquainted with the congress’ website www.ishm2020.com which contains the agenda, lectures and section topics. 

RSU employees get a reduced registration fee – 100 EUR (standard fee – 300 EUR).

Participation for passive participants: free of charge. Registration for passive participants will open in April.
