Objective

To obtain knowledge of structure, functions and diseases of periodontium and related systemic diseases; students should learn how to diagnose periodontal diseases, choose the appropriate treatment methods, and students should acquire skills in using them in practical clinical work.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, histology, microbiology, pharmacology, internal diseases and prevention of oral diseases, and preferably of immunology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.On successful completion of the course the students will be able to:
• describe aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases;
• explain classification of periodontal diseases;
• recognise different forms of periodontal lesions;
• formulate phases of periodontal treatment and its sequence.

Skills

1.On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:
• perform periodontal examination of the patient;
• evaluate prognosis for each particular tooth as well as dentition of the patient;
• create the treatment plan for the initial phase of treatment:
• manage the diagnose and urgent treatment of acute conditions;
• perform practically the conventional methods of periodontal inflammatory diseases;
• develop the treatment plan of the corrective and supportive phases of the treatment;
• evaluate the results of the periodontal treatment.

Competence

1.On successful completion of the course the students will be able to apply the knowledge and practical skills in diagnosing periodontal diseases and complex treatment of oral diseases.
