On 12 February, representatives of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) met with the Minister of Health, Hosams Abu Meri, the Director of the Emergency Medical Service (EMS), Liene Cipule, and other sector representatives to discuss the establishment of the paramedic profession in Latvia and the development of a corresponding study programme at RSU.

Prof. Inga Millere from the Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences explains: ‘The idea to establish the paramedic profession in Latvia originates from the EMS. It is an internationally standardised profession in emergency medicine, requiring professional education and clearly defined competencies. The Ministry of Health supports this initiative, seeing our university as a cooperation partner for the development of this programme.
The EMS has invited RSU to develop a professional bachelor’s study programme that would strengthen pre-hospital care.
Our university is responsive to labour market needs, and this is also the case in this situation. It should be noted that significant work lies ahead to develop a new profession with an appropriate study programme and qualification that meets international standards.

An important element in the development of this programme would be the inclusion of a military medicine course, ensuring that in the event of a threat these specialists would be prepared for complex situations.'
The introduction of the paramedic profession is an important step in strengthening emergency medical care, ensuring modern, effective, and future-oriented training of specialists.
