The RSU Faculty of Social Sciences, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, invites you to attend a guest lecture by Dr Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), entitled “The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty: Science and Diplomacy for a Safer World.”
The aim of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization is to help achieve a world without nuclear testing. The main task of the CTBTO is to monitor whether nuclear tests are being conducted anywhere in the world. For this purpose, a global International Monitoring System is being developed — a network of seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasound and radionuclide stations. Once fully completed, the system will consist of 321 monitoring stations and 16 laboratories in 89 countries. Approximately 90% of these facilities are already operational and transmit data in real time. The CTBTO functions as a global alarm system that helps detect possible secret nuclear explosions anywhere in the world.
