Gliomas are malignant, infiltrative (without a clear border with surrounding tissues) tumours of the central nervous system that develop from glial cells. Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive type of glioma. No significant progress has yet been made in treating these tumours and the prognosis for patients with glioblastoma remains very poor.

A research project is being implemented at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Scientific Laboratory of Molecular Genetics introduce spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) diagnostics in screenings of newborns. This allows early treatment to be started before symptoms start. 

An innovative test developed in the international PERFORM study will now be able to determine the cause of a child's fever more accurately, which will allow for more appropriate and safe treatments. The study was carried out over five and a half years under the European Union (EU) Horizon 2020 programme and involved ten European countries, including Latvia, The Gambia, Taiwan and Nepal. The total funding was 18m EUR.

André Thiemann is a Postdoctoral Lead Researcher in the project Comparing Vital Capitals: An anthropological analysis of the global value chains of sea buckthorn and raspberries. Through the study, he hopes to get a better understanding of the economies, the history and the people of Eastern Europe, and by extension of his home region, Eastern Germany.

The fifth period of the Healthy Boost project that is being implemented by researchers from the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Institute of Public Health (IPH) within the framework of the INTERREG Baltic Sea Region Transnational Cooperation Programme, came to an end in June.
