A new platform for studies and information exchange has been launched within the framework of the Baltic Sea region project BaltCityPrevention – www.betterprevention.eu. It aims at supporting public healthcare authorities in the Baltic Sea region in their efforts to prevent lifestyle diseases among young people.
‘Research taught me to stay organised throughout the day and to make use of every minute,’ says Vice-Dean of RSU Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare Toms Pulmanis. Toms dedicates his evenings, weekends and vacations to research as workdays are usually taken up by administrative duties and working with students.
On Saturday 9 February the Student Union of Latvia (SUL) held its annual awards ceremony. The majority of the awards were granted to representatives from Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU): Student of the Year, Young Researcher of the Year, Project of the Year, Councillor of the Year, Activist of the Year, Development of the Year and Student Union of the Year. Additionally the award for Contribution to the Enhancement of Social Life went to the Latvian Junior Doctors’ Association lead by several RSU lecturers and residency students.
Innovation is and always has been an important prerequisite for success in any field. Since late 2018 RSU is a RIS-HUB in the European Innovative Technologies (EIT) for Health network ensuring the linkage of innovation and education and the creation of business.
The International Department (ID) at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) recently organised a seminar on intercultural communication in the professional environment. This seminar was the first in a cycle which will offer both international and local students an opportunity to improve their social skills. The seminar was conducted by Irma Kalniņa who is the leading expert of business communication in Latvia. She covered such topics as the influence of various cultures on an organisation, cultural barriers and how to overcome them, and multicultural organisations.
On 27 February – 1 March the World Health Organisation’s Regional Office for Europe and Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) together with the Nordic Council of Ministers will organise a seminar ‘Towards healthy and sustainable food systems in the Baltic region’ with the goal to discuss data needs, available policy options and the role of transformation partners and stakeholders in the Baltic region.
The final seminar (webinar) of the Central Baltic Area project 'OnBoard-Med – Harmonization of on Board Medical Treatment, Occupational Safety and Emergency Skills in Baltic Sea Shipping' will be held on 6 March. The webinar will be about the cooperation between medical staff and mariners, and about the training of specialists in providing medical assistance on board.
The seminar will be conducted in English.
This year Linda Skulme, a 4th year physiotherapy student at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Faculty of Rehabilitation, is a senior member of the Student Union, but in 2018 she was the Chairperson of this student organisation.
On Tuesday February 26 at 18:00 social anthropologist and Rīga Stradiņš University guest lecturer, Tobias Köllner, will give a public talk – ‘On Entangled Authorities: The Interplay between Orthodox Religion and Politics in Contemporary Russia.’ The event will take place in the AsiaRes Reading Room (Level M) in the National Library of Latvia.
