This February, 150 local and 279 international students representing 20 countries joined the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) student body. In this winter intake the university received a total of 654 applications with “Medicine” as the most popular study programme among international applicants. Local applicants were most interested in the study programme “Law” which was offered both at undergraduate and postgraduate level in this winter intake.

Prof. Andris Sprūds, Dean of the Faculty of European Studies (FES), joined the RSU academic staff from the outset – in 1998. As the professor himself admits, back then right after graduating with a Master's degree, it was a professional challenge that he couldn't allow to pass by. In the 20th anniversary year of social sciences programmes, A. Sprūds shares his time at RSU, his first year as a dean, and the vision for the development of the faculty.

Ieva Lībiete

Ieva Lībiete is a lecturer at the Institute of the History of Medicine (IHM) at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and is in charge of establishing an ambitious RSU Museum of Anatomy. Among the most successful academic projects she highlights the digitalisation, redefining of the IHM collection of articles Acta medico-historica Rigensia and the collection being made available to the public. This resulted in the aforementioned collection of articles being included in the largest open-access database of academic journals: Directory of Open Access Journals.

Gundega Jākobsone

As a child, Gundega Jākobsone wanted to become a doctor. When it was time to commence studies, she only had to decide on the specialty, and her choice was dentistry, since she had enjoyed it while working as an orderly assistant at the Institute of Stomatology during her summer vacation. Now she is Head of the Department of Orthodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and an associate professor.

Record number of abstracts submitted for RSU Research Week 2019

A record-breaking number of 823 abstracts were submitted for the international conferences "Knowledge for Use in Practice" and "PLACES", to be held within the frame of RSU Research Week. The number of submissions tripled, in comparison to last year – with around 10 percent of applications received from abroad.

The International Abstract Review Committee will evaluate the submitted abstracts and select authors for participation in the conference with oral or poster presentations. The authors will be notified of the results by 11 February.

Māris Lapšovs

On 1 January, Māris Lapšovs, a third-year student in the study programme Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine was appointed Chairperson of the Student Union at Rīga Stradiņš University. Initially, in the second semester of his first year he was Assistant Chairperson of the Student Union, after that he was elected Head of the Department of Academic Affairs, but now, for a year, he will perform the duties of Chairperson of the Student Union.
