Objective

To provide a basic knowledge in acoustic phonetics and branches of acoustic phonetics, to acquire the basics of acoustic analysis of sounds; to promote the use and extension of specific vocabulary for academic and professional needs.

Prerequisites

Knowledge in Phonetics acquired at the Bachelor’s study programme “Speech Therapy”.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

The students will be able:
- to explain and understand special terminology of acoustic phonetics;
- to understand the spectrum of sound, make a description of measurements;
- to understand and analyse sounds of the Latvian language by using spectral features;
- to analyse and explain problems associated with the acoustic analysis of the sounds.

Skills

- to use acoustic analysis of sounds for professional needs in speech therapy;
- to use a software for acoustic analysis;
- to use special terminology of acoustic phonetics;
- to formulate one’s opinion.

Competence

Upon a successful completion of the course, students will be able to analyse all Latvian sounds according to its spectral characteristics.
