Objective

To provide knowledge about fetal physiology, hypoxic birth stress, fetal adaptation and compensation mechanisms under hypoxic stress conditions.
To provide knowledge about the methods of assessing the well-being of the fetus and to develop the skills of applying these methods, to create an understanding of the intrauterine resuscitation of the fetus.
To improve knowledge about pregnancy and childbirth risk factors affecting the well-being of the fetus.

Prerequisites

In human anatomy and physiology, embryology, development and course of physiological pregnancy and childbirth.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Students are familiar with the physiology of the fetus - blood circulation, gas and substance exchange, circulation and heartbeat regulation mechanisms, understand the compensatory mechanisms of the fetus for adaptation in conditions of hypoxic stress.
Focuses on types of fetal hypoxia, pathophysiology of their development.
Knows the methods of assessing the well-being of the fetus during pregnancy and childbirth, understands the indications for their application, analyzes the obtained data, predicts changes in the development of the well-being of the fetus in connection with the clinical picture of pregnancy and childbirth.
Knows measures to improve the well-being of the fetus - intrauterine resuscitation.
Knows the risk factors of pregnancy and childbirth, which affect the well-being of the fetus and relates them to the obtained fetal assessment data.
Understands the limitations of fetal well-being assessment methods.

Skills

The methods of auscultation and electronic evaluation of the fetal heartbeat (cardiotocography, STAN) are applied, the obtained results are analyzed in relation to the clinical picture during pregnancy and childbirth.
Recognize the types of hypoxia and signs of development in the cardiotocogram and/or STAN record, perform measures to improve the well-being of the fetus (intrauterine resuscitation).
Students are able to work in a team in the process of obstetric care, performing fetal well-being assessment and measures to improve fetal oxygenation.

Competence

Students are able to independently assess the well-being of the fetus, determine the type and development of hypoxia, determine the ability of the fetus to compensate for hypoxic birth stress, and choose appropriate measures to improve fetal oxygenation.
