Objective

To provide an understanding of the theoretical framework and practical aspects of child and adolescent psychiatry in the education, health and social care systems of the world and Latvia. To ensure the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for the detection, recognition and description of symptoms and syndromes of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. To ensure the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for psychopharmacotherapeutic treatment of children and adolescents – preparations used in psychopharmacotherapy, action thereof, pharmacoeconomics and emergency psychiatric assistance. To ensure the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for independent work with various groups of minor patients.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Knowledge on the aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, course and basic principles of treatment of mental and behavioural disorders in children and adolescents; rehabilitation and prevention thereof.

Skills

1.The skill of diagnosing mental and behavioural disorders in children and adolescents in accordance with the ICD-10 classification by means of comprehensive evaluation of patient’s condition in dynamic change and respective reflection thereof in medical documentation; the skill of treating the patient, to develop an individual care plan for the patient by including the required examinations, medication therapy, psychological therapy and psychosocial rehabilitation, etc.

Competence

1.Competences to cooperate with a minor patient and their family in order to ensure a dynamic evaluation of the state of health and treatment results; in the organisation of inpatient and outpatient care, providing emergency and planned psychiatric help and rehabilitation for children and adolescents. To cooperate with other care providers, the child and their family members during the treatment process; educate them about the course and treatment of the disease; be aware of the limits of one’s professional competence.
