Objective

To explain the place of human homoeostasis in the surrounding environment and its relations with other biological objects.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of biology, chemistry, computer science, English (level B2) acquired within the framework of general secondary education. The result of the centralized examination in biology and English is not older than 5 years.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to carry out the following activities: explain the conditions for collecting, drying and storing of medicinal plants; classify plants according to their biogenic substances; justify the use of particular plants for the treatment of particular diseases (treatment of cardiovascular diseases; improvement of the functioning of digestive system; treatment of cold and skin diseases); explain their influence on human body; justify the rational use of medicinal herbs in treatment; recommend relaxing and vitamin-fortified teas for everyday use, use Latin names and terminology (in Latvian, Russian and other languages according to the native language) of medicinal plants during lectures and practical classes.

Skills

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to carry out the following activities: recognise the most popular medicinal herbs in Latvia; classify herbs according to their action; prove the existence of biogenic substances in medicinal plants, explain the results of experiment on chemical and physical properties of biogenic substances and their basic structure; put forward conclusions based on the obtained results, make tea and infusion and pharmaceutical forms, and use the databases of medicinal register and food supplements.

Competence

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to analyse situations, logically formulate their opinion about therapeutic effect of medicinal herbs and choice of medicinal herbs depending on the goal, and anticipate side effects.
